R, aged about 25, was admitted to Chittadhama in September 2015. He was quiet, withdrawn, and unable to recall where he came from. He spoke very little, struggled to remember his own name, and seemed entirely disconnected from the world around him.
With treatment, R began to transform. He grew warm, friendly, and deeply connected to the Chittadhama community. He found immense joy in our agricultural rehabilitation programme and even joined our cricket team — becoming a star player who won several awards in local tournaments.
Once R was able to give details of his family, his younger brother was contacted. He visited Chittadhama and promised to come back to fetch R, but never turned up. R grew homesick, longing to see his family. Determined to help, our caretakers travelled with R to his childhood address.
Upon arrival, they learned the heartbreaking news that R's parents had passed away years ago. His brother remained unable to care for him — but hope was not lost. We visited R's elderly uncle and aunt, living five hours away, who had originally raised R and his brother. Despite their age, they welcomed R back with open, tearful arms. Seeing his family for the first time in ten years, R's face lit up. “I am so happy to have reached home,” he said with a beaming smile.
